“My wife Amie, along with our daughter Abbi, came up with the name Blackbrier Spaniels in acknowledgement of our role as “stewards of the breed”. It was apparent to me early on that our involvement in the Springer Spaniel community would go beyond a mere hobby. We hunt our dogs, participate in Field Trialling, Hunt Test, and breeding. I am a Field Trial and Hunt Test judge, gun and have organized both types of events.
Our personal dogs have accomplished many field titles and national placements, highlighted by Trace winning the 2017 Canadian National Championship. Several of our puppies have earned field titles, national placements, and 4 national High point Awards; two of which are North American High Point awards given to the dog that earns the most points each year in both Canada and the U.S.
I was introduced to Sporting Saint about five years ago through my friendship with Andy Cullen of Laochin Gundogs. Andy was working with them at the time to develop a new training aid, he kindly arranged for Sporting Saint to provide me with a set of my own to demo.
I was immediately impressed with the quality of the set up. I particularly liked the weight and feel of the bumpers (canvas dummies).
This summer we hosted Andy for a gundog training seminar. The equipment he uses by Sporting Saint became the focus of many side bar conversations. Sporting Saint was kind enough to provide me with a sample of some of that equipment. Again, I cannot stress enough the quality of the items I have utilized.
We all have had dogs who need that little something extra in training to achieve their best. The Flight and Flight Dead Bird dummies can provide that motivation. The attention to detail in the design of the Flight and Flight Dead Bird dummies is impressive. They each replicate the size, shape, and pattern of the birds they represent. For young dogs especially, they are the “next step” in preparation for Live birds.
